Life Updates!

Hello Hello! I feel like I’ve been away so long…oh wait, I have. I pretty much skipped my June Rewind post, so I thought I’d just give you an update on the happenings in my life.

Pepe

For those who follow me on Facebook, I came this close to saying good-bye to my fur baby Pepe. He had been sick since I moved back to LA in March, and I was trying all kinds of things to get to the bottom (they keyword here is bottom-if you catch my drift) of his problem. And of course, took him to the vet. At the 11th hour, I tried a different food (prescription…$$$) and voila, he got better. Then he started having a few accidents outside his litterbox, which was fun since I was in Detroit when most of it was happening, but that corrected itself as well.

He also might be a lot happier now that he pretty much sleeps under my feet all day while I work. Something I wasn’t letting him do before. Viva Pepe…he lives on.

Detroit

I went home to visit the folks in June. I made the mistake of making it a working vacation, and it kind of bit me in the ass. Spotty internet, my dad re-doing his floors, and just not getting enough extra time to visit friends, made it not quite as fun. Lesson learned. I did, however, make it back to Cedar Point with my college roommate Tammy, and we ended up with a gorgeous day, despite the fact that Michigan and Ohio had an extremely dreary spring. Love the big rides!!

Speaking of rides, I got to ride the brand new Vespa my mom bought, and I might have had some influence on her getting her first tattoo at 72. First, we went to a Honda dealership, which sold scooters, motorbikes, and other ATVs to buy a helmet. She ended up buying this crotch-rocket-type jacket that she thought was, “so cute.” You can see her wearing it in the video. Overkill? Yes, especially since that scene in the video was her first time riding it…and she did…on the sidewalk. Le sigh…

Me on the other hand? I took off like a bat out of hell and went on a looooong joyride. It’s SUPER fun. My mom has yet to ride it since.

Health, Fitness, and Cryotherapy

Some good news is I’m still maintaining my routine of beach volleyball, running, and CrossFit Balcony. I did have a period of about two weeks though where my body was suddenly kind of aching everywhere. It’s like I had suddenly developed spontaneous arthritis. Part of it, at least with my shoulder, was my fault since I discovered how to jump serve, but still have yet to master proper arm swing, so I was powering through with my shoulder and well, my shoulder was pissed.

So, lots of icing, stretching, mobility stuff, foam rolling, using the lacrosse ball, strength training, and of course good ol’ Aleve. I also bought a Groupon for a cryotherapy session. Instead of the typical tiny chamber where just your head is sticking out, this one was a room you go into. You can request a song to get through the 2 minutes of freezing, so I chose Justin Timberlake and had no shame dancing in front of the staff to take my mind off being cold.

The big question is does it work? Hmmmm, I’m not really sure it does. It feels invigorating, but the jury is still out on whether it has as many health benefits as it claims. I’m probably better off just jumping into the Pacific Ocean after volleyball class for a free cool dip.

As far as the insomnia I’ve had since I’ve moved back? It’s hit or miss.

Work and Money

So I’m still doing freelancing with The Financial Gym and VolleyCamp Hermosa mostly. Actually, Shannon will be out here in LA this week so I’ll be seeing her twice for drinks/dinner. I did have one client I was working with this past month that I was hoping would lead somewhere, but I’m not sure it’s going to, even though I got really great feedback. Image may be NSFW.

I know one thing I’m NOT doing that I need to be doing is working on promoting myself a lot more. I’m good at promoting other people and helping other people shine, but not so good about doing it so MY business and income can grow. And of COURSE it’s great to help clients succeed, but as the old saying goes, you have to put the oxygen mask on yourself before helping other people.

In regards to money, I’m still not doing my best in the spending department. My goal was to not use my credit card in June and I used it twice. Once to buy my plane ticket to Seattle for the Lola Money Retreat where I’m speaking on a panel, and I forget the other thing. Not bad I guess, but I’m disappointed I’m not being as disciplined as I should want to be.

Speaking of promoting myself, here is a video I recently did for VolleyCamp Hermosa.

Other Random Things

Melanie from Dear Debt hosted a pool party in Pasadena (she rented a guest house with a pool) with some bad-ass freelancers she knows/I know. She was also celebrating 5 years as a full-time freelancer. It was super fun!

I’ve been watching all the old Veronica Mars episodes on Hulu before I dive into the newly released season. I watched it back in the day but forgot how many people made it big after the show: Jessica Chastain, Tessa Thompson, Aaron Paul, Armie Hammer, Melissa Leo, Anthony Anderson, and Michael Cera to name a few. The new episodes were shot in Hermosa Beach (this clip is the net where I actually train), where I spend most of my beach time, but I’m watching it all in order first…at least I’m going to try.

That about does it for updates. In the next few weeks I’m hoping to do some organizing and getting some life stuff taken care of: dentist, doctor, car registration. Also stepping up my game in looking for new clients/video work, and organizing finances…you know, adulting.

See you next time!
